Rather than continue to debate the source of the power that runs an electric
fan (battery or alternator/generator) and the amount of the resulting
horsepower loss, could we just agree that:

1) A mechanical fan results in a horsepower loss. It cools the least when
you need it the most and works hardest when you need it the least. Removing
it is always a plus unless you've entered a concours.

2) An electric fan can only cost horsepower if it's running.

3) You don't need maximum horsepower when your car is standing still - you
need it when running at high revs and at speed.

4) While electrical fans can fail, so can generators and fan belts.

5) If you're worried about the horsepower loss of an electric fan, install a
manual on/off switch. When a road race/autocross/drag race breaks out, turn
the damn thing off.
