Steve :
The only trick I've ever used is to follow the factory procedure to the
letter :
>>>
Mount the wheel cylinder onto the backplate with the neck through the
large slot. Replace distance piece between cylinder and backplate, with
the open end away from the handbrake lever location. The two cranked
lips must also be away from the backplate.
Insert the spring plate between the distance piece and the backplate,
alwo with open end away from the handbrake lever location and the two
cranked lips away from the backplate.
Replace the handbrake lever. Locate the retaining plate between the
distance piece and spring plate (open end towards the handbrake lever),
tap into position until the two cranked tips of the spirng plate locate
in the retaining plate.
<<<
Note that there are many illustrations running around (including the one
in the TR2/3 factory manual) that show the spring plate and distance
plate in the opposite orientation. I believe the printed instructions
are correct, the illustration is wrong.
Also, the 'distance piece' is the smaller piece, the 'spring plate' is
the larger piece with the two lips, the 'distance piece' is the larger
piece without lips.
