Ah, memories of college.... As a former flat-lander skier, northern Wisconsin
down to -40 degrees one time (we're not talking wind chill here) and Healey
owner
at that time block heaters were a necessity. Best type "pump" the coolant by
means of hot water rising and cold dropping. So if you install a block heater
of
this type, usually spliced into the system via a heater hose, position of heater
is crucial. So follow the instructions.
Other type is inserted into the the block. Removal of freeze plug. Check for
leaks on this type. (Also can be used to heat water for instant coffee during
warmer weather - another student memory at the U of Wisconsin)
For both types make sure you have enough wattage. More wattage = less time to
get up to starting temperature. I recall a study done that calculated the
electricity used by heater versus the savings in gas consumption! Can get
water
quite warm, so you get instant "heat" out of your heater.. Yeah, right as
Healey
or Triumph heater :-)
But it does save your engine. Oil gets circulated, not "thin grease"
