Hi Bob.
Regarding your question about your cracked second gear bushing...
Most times you're better off installing a new second gear top-hat bush,
cracked or not.
If the top-hat bushing does break apart, the top part will "spin" on the
bottom part and eventually the end-float will get very large. If you're
lucky, you'll only have trouble down shifting. If you're not lucky, the
spacer bushing will explode and you'll need the following pieces at the
very least: top-hat bush, third bush, spacer washer, second gear -
mainshaft, second gear - layshaft, mainshaft and a few other odd bits.
I've been down that street.
As for the case cracking, this is/was pretty common. All the racers figured
this out years ago. The result from the factory was the beefier cases in
the TR4A and later... maybe even with the advent of the all synchro gear
case. Anyway, the later trannies have extra "webbing" between the gearbox
part of the casting and the bell housing part.
If you suspect that the impact of the collision was responsible for the
crack in the top-hat bushing, you should get the mainshaft measured to make
sure it's "true". I wouldn't re-use a mainshaft with _any_ runout, but
there's probably a spec for what is accepted.
