List,
I'm wondering whether anyone has suggestions for finding gasket jointing
compound for engine reassembly. All I find at the local auto parts stores
is the RTV stuff. The obvious problems with this stuff is that it likes to
allow the gaskets to slip & slide while tightening components. I like to
think that jointing compound is the better choice - but could be swayed the
other way if there is a strong consensus.

Also, does anyone have a 'great' thought on whether to coat the head gasket
with any chemical or material prior to installation of the head? I've heard
that, of all things, a light, dry coat of white paint on the head gasket can
help with sealing.

Lastly, I recently heard of hylomar sealant. Is this the wave of the
future? I understand it is impervious to all car related substances - i.e.
gasoline, oil, gear oil, ....

Thanks,
Eric
