Some of the older instruments have a small window(s) around the perimeter of
the case, near the face end of the case. They also have a provision for an
external lamp attached behind the dash fascia, or to the instrument which
allows light to enter the case, and illuminate the face of the gage. You
quite likely have one of these units. I do not know if the gages are
interchangable within the case, however.
