in place.

I won't know the practical answer to the latter until the engine is 
stripped for rebuild.

The worst that could happen is the lifters will end up in lifter heaven
(that region above the camshaft and below the head) and the push rods will
end up against the rocker cover.  But cranking the engine in a continual
state of compression stroke won't turn it fast enough to do any harm.  But
hit them for new lifters and rods anyway!
