Mike--
I looked at doing this several months ago for my '76 but was unable to
actually find anyone who had completed a conversion. One person I discussed
it with had begun a conversion but changed his mind part way through. In
the process, he told me he discovered that some minor frame alterations were
going to be necessary. I really liked the idea of a 5-speed, but didn't
want to be the first person to finish one. I ultimately went with a J-type
OD from Atlanta Imports for about $750 + or -. They get complete trans/OD
units from 2000/2500 saloons overseas and clean, inspect, install new seals
and whatever else they need to fit a TR6. (No warranty, but mine's in the
car and runs great.) Don't know if they can make one fit a '71, which, of
course, needs the A-type OD, but they might be able to give you some ideas.
They're at 1/800-241-0869. No financial interest, etc.
