Age, use and maybe heating/cooling. Spring steel is tempered in such a way
that it will only withstand so many cycles.

On investigating my clutch problem further, I discovered that the spring
in the master cylinder had, well, shattered is the only work for it.
When I removed it, it was in 6 pieces, with several other cracks. Has
anyone else encountered this problem, and does anyone have any idea what
could have caused it?
