Hello fellow listers,

Over the New Years weekend I finished removing the rear brake
components from my 57 TR3.

On closer inspection I need to change my comments about not having
shoe hold downs installed. Based on comments from list members I
removed the shoes and found the alignment posts screwed into the
backing plate. Three of the posts still had the felt washer on them.

What I did find that was causing the rear brakes to grab while pushing
the car was that two of the retaining clips were missing on the left rear
cylinder.

Inspection of the cylinders show that they are Girling 3/4 inch # 304170.
Looking at the catalogs the cylinders I have don't look like the ones
illustrated. Mine have a flat piston end while the illustrations show a
slotted end.

My questions.

Are the cylinders I have the correct ones? My thoughts are that if there
are no shoe hold down springs then the slotted cylinders are used to hold
the shoes in place while the flat end cylinders would allow the shoes to
wobble.

What is the Girling part number for the slotted cylinder? Two of the big
three list the slotted cylinders in their catalogs. Are these cylinders
available from other sources?

I am going to replace all of the brake lines on my car. I am curious to
know what fittings are being used. I know these are standard fittings and
I would like to know the fitting name or number so that I could obtain the
correct fittings. Short of taking the fitting up to the local autoparts place
and saying that I want 6 of these. I want to be able to ask for 6 of male
type x-yy fittings instead.

Thank you
Roger
