I feel 3K is a bit short, I shoot for closer to 5-7K (and change the filter
every time).
IMO the issue is not so much dirt and moisture (the oil filter traps the
significant dirt, the moisture boils off when the oil reaches the proper
temperature) but that the various additives still have a limited lifetime.
I use Valvoline synthetic, mostly because it greatly reduces oil burning in
my 200K+ mile POS Chevy. (Which BTW started burning oil when I temporarily
switched from Valvoline Racing to Castrol.) I use it in the TR3 on the
thought (probably wishful) that it _may_ reduce wear. It does seem to
reduce the amount of oil blown through the fill cap, which presumably means
it is reducing blow-by under load. At $4/quart, it isn't a large part of
my operating costs.
