Brian,
The same thing happened to me. I bought one from Moss (p/n 542-110) that
lasted one year and then had the same symptoms as yours. I then got one
from TRF which is still like new about 3 years later. It's a dangerous
situation, because normal brake pressure is never enough to illuminate the
lamp.
All I can say is -- if TRF is out of stock, try other vendors. I sure
wouldn't put another Moss unit in. (Not to knock Moss, I have been
perfectly happy with lots of their other parts. However, by coincidence I
just returned two other new parts to them that were defective last week.)

Subject: TR4 - Hydraulic Type Brake Light Switch Failure
Listers,
This morning driving to work I noticed that my brake lights are not
working unless I am pushing real hard on the brake pedal. When I
bought the car last summer... it had the same symptom and I replaced
the unit with one from MOSS. TRF had no stock.
Looks like the exact same failure again. Anybody seen this behavior
before and have any advice on a source for a reliable part.
