Paul,

I have the same problem with my fuel pump. It is the AC repro version
without the priming lever. When I pulled the engine for rebuild I
installed a fuel shutoff valve on the end of the rubber tubing that feeds
the fuel pump. It was the plastic kind that is used on snow blowers and
garden tractors.

This was to control the gravity feed of the gas all over the floor. But I
use it now to keep the leaky fuel pump diaphragm and sediment bowl gaskets
from causing that smell. When I am finished driving the car for a while I
will pop the hood a turn off the fuel.... this takes the "pressure" off the
seals.

The cure is to get a new "repro" fuel pump... not super expensive. Or as I
have planned for the winter.... rebuild an old original pump w/lever. I
bought one recently from pile of TR parts and the rebuild kits are
available from TRF and Moss for these original units but not for the repro
units. They are cheap enough to buy and toss... I suppose.

The CT29734LO from a black and silver plate on the driver's side of the
engine bay..... means your car was built in Feb-Mar 1964 (the 29734) with L
for left hand drive and O for overdrive gearbox. The aluminum plate on the
passengers side is the chassis or body number. This can be as much 600
away from the commission number. Bodies were manufactured offsite and
stacked up as they came in and not always used on a FIFO bases. The engine
number is usually closer but not the same. You will find it on the left
hand side of the engine block just below the #3 plug.

Get a copy of Bill Piggot book... "Original TR4, TR4A, TR5/250, a
Restorer's Guide". I will cover all the history, facts and provide a great
source foe what the car should look like.
