Graham,

You write:

What is the advantage of a hydraulic clutch? Is it the old more parts
to wear out faster bit, or is there a reason? Just wondering, I mean
the pedal is right there, it seems like a lot of trouble to run that
whole hydraulic system.
    Just wondering.

The pedal is not always "right there". Remember, for those of us with right
hand drive, hydraulics offers a good solution to activate the clutch. I would
hate to design a mechanical system the travels from the right side way over and
down to the left side of the transmission!

Maybe the reason car manufacturers went with hydraulic clutches is the same
reason they switched to hydraulic brakes from mechanical brakes in the 20's and
30's.
