this problem haunts everyone as to what to do. for me the best
connection is a solder connection. but i do run into the brittle and
moisture problem. someones suggestion to shrink tube over the connection
is a good one but there is a better solution out there. they are called
solder or crimp shrink connectors. i am in the automotive aftermarket
and when i saw these it was a God send. the perfect connection for a
split wire. you can get them in ring or spades too. what they are are
individual shrink tubes with a gel coating inside that bonds to the
wire. sealing out all moisture and putting the stress on the insulated
wire on both sides of the connection.. the connection never flexes so NO
failures.
the only time you would need to chose between solder or crimp is when a
computer is involved. ford and gm both require when changing pig tails
that feed a computer must have "crimp"shrink connectors. they have
evidence that shows that crimping has less resistance to it if done
properly.
if you have a heat gun use it instead of a torch. a torch is too hot.
the solder is a low temp solder that melts at 300 degrees. shrink both
ends first then focus the heat on the center of the connection and watch
for the solder to melt. make sure you have even heat all around.
be prepared to spend about a $1 each. pricy, but worth the peace of
mind.
