You can get the timing cover off without pulling the apron (I've done it),
but it's not for the faint of heart. Start by loosening the big bolt
through the fan hub, and then remove the 6 bolts holding the fan hub
together. If you are lucky, you can then remove the front half of the fan
hub (extension) together with the fan and bolt. You may have to take the
radiator loose from it's mounts and/or the engine loose, to get enough
room. Once the front half of the hub is out, the rest is easy (Well,
relatively ...)
However, I wouldn't expect the chain or tensioner to squeak, unless
something else is wrong (like no oil coming from the front cam bearing).
I've had a tensioner break (see above) and it was more of a jingle/rattle
noise. Bob Schaller did mention the tensioner as a weak point in "More
BS...", but I've run my new one well over 10,000 miles with no problem.
Don't forget to replace the front seal while you are in there.
