>MY 1960 TR-3 ENGINE HAS A SQUEAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE
ENGINE. I'VE NARROWED IT TO THE TIMING CHAIN COVER.
I'M ASSUMING IT'S THE CHAIN AND OR TENSIONOR. SO I PURCHASED A KIT AND
READ UP ON IT. THE REPAIR BOOK SAID TO TAKE THE FRONT APRON OFF TO GET
THE RADIATOR OUT!!!!! IS THERE A SHORTCUT FOR THIS JOB?
IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MOTOR? THERE IS ONLY 10K ON THIS
REBUILT MOTOR AND WOULD HATE TO DO IT AGAIN IN ANOTHER 10K.
Larry,
First, DROP THE ALL CAPS. It's the equivalent of shouting!
Have you run the engine (quickly) with the fan belt off. That will isolate
the water pump and generator and insure it is not one of them.
It's hard to pinpoint sounds up there near the front. Several years ago, I
had an knock which I was sure was a worn front main bearing, as did a local
mechanic. I pulled the fan belt (thanks to a listers suggestion) and
discovered it was the water pump pulley, loose on it's shaft.
Shortcut? Not really, although I have heard of people pulling the radiator
out (down) without pulling the apron. I'd probably pull the apron, but I'd
be sure to check out all other possibilities first.
Good luck,
