I'm no expert... but two things come to mind.

1)  Emory cloth (or sandpaper) will tend to round off the points.. when you
want nice parallel surfaces with good contact area.

2)  Emory cloth will leave all kinds of neat abrasive bits (silica or garnet
or aluminum oxide or whatever) in close proximity to bearing surfaces.  Not
a wise idea.

For points I have a thin file sold specifically as a "points file", got it
about 14 years ago from a supplier in NY that specialized in automotive
tools.  I'd think Napa may sell something similar... have had to look for a
new one yet.  :-)
