Hi all

I actually had two days of driving my "new" TR6 before pulling the alt
and battery for testing. The good news, my dash volt meter works even
though it was only ever reading < 11 volts. The bad news, one dead cell
in the battery and one dead alt which probably caused the dead cell.

Our local electrical guru here in Ottawa rebuilt my alt, new brushes,
new bearings, checked diodes, cleaned and shined some bolts for solid
connections. But now he says it won't start generating until he shorts
something with a screwdriver. Forgive my vagueness. He says it pumps
out lots of juice once it gets going, but won't start up by itself
without this kick in the pants shorting he has to do. Any hints as to
what we can do here? Just toss it?

It's a 37A Delco unit, not a Lucas. I've surfed the VTR site and found
the text about replacing the Lucas units with GM alts, but nowhere does
it give makes, models, or years for units that can be substituted. I'm
really itching to get this fixed. I've had the car for almost three
weeks now, have had it on the road for only two days. That's about
$2000/day driving average cost (OK, it's CDN $ but it's still expensive
in my eyes). Plus, I missed our local Brit car show this past Sunday
cause I've got no juice (no alts for sale there either).

It's a 4 day weekend about to happen here, and I'd like to enjoy it with
some top down motoring, not parking.
