I also disagree, to some extent.  I'm sure "your word is your bond", but
when I'm looking at a used car I definitely believe in "trust but
verify".

A seller that won't let me drive the car (with him in it), or take it
(on a trailer if necessary, and with him along) to an independant
mechanic, is trying to hide something.
Frankly, all the receipts and show awards in the world don't mean the
right work was done right, or even to the car in question.

OTOH, your buyers sound fishy to me.  I would never expect a seller to
let me leave with his car without him as passenger, ESPECIALLY a show
car where low mileage is a factor.  "Taking the car for the day" is
absolutely absurd !  (Reminds me of the time our family car died, and
Dad took a 'test drive' to all the other used car dealers.  He
eventually bought the first car anyway, which was a mistake, but that's
another story.)
