If you can, solder the crimp connectors on.  I buy them in bulk and take
the boots off (the yellow / red/ blue thing).  Then use the crimper to
crimp the terminal on, fill with good (electronic) solder, and
heat-shrink some tubing on top.

Belt & suspenders?  You bet.  But I don't like repeat performances.

Sometimes it's a good plan to cut a bit of the old wire off and get some
nice shiny new stuff; often the ends of the old wire will be quite
corroded.  I guess you could dunk the wire end in vinegar for a few
moments too, to etch off all the guck?
