Re installing WIndows 95 should work, but you will probably lose all the
programs on the task bar. Do you have Snacks in your STARTUP folder
? Otherwise it is probably in your WIndows Register, which can be
edited,
but if any mistake is made it causes major problems - I have only just
found
out about it from various magazines and books myself. The windows
register may be the source of your close down problem too - if there are
problems caused by switching off, then Windows 95 will want to come up
in 'SAFE' mode when next switching on (you will get a message about
this).
You can actually get W95 to come up in a 'selective' mode yourself and
see
exactly what is being run when the computer starts but this depends on
the
computer sometimes

Maybe someone else knows a bit more than me !
