Scott,

I'm currently performing a TR6 front end rebuild as we speak, using a
TRF tool. If you've got all the components listed in your post, they
don't match what I've got. In fact, you have more stuff than needed for
the TR6.

I got a threaded rod that is, what, some 15 or so inched long, 3 nuts
and I think 3 washers (I think as I'm not in the garage at the moment),
and the 1/2" aluminum plate with a rounded end, square end and 4 holes.

Assemble the rod thusly. Starting about 2 inched from one assemble a
nut, washer, plate, washer and nut. Tighten these 2 nuts good and snug
against the plate. Insert the assembly from the bottom of the lower
spring plate opening, inserting the 4 lower shock mounting holes through
the plate. The rounded end of the plate goes towards the outside of the
car. The other end of the threaded rod has to be "fished" thru the top
mounting point for the shock Place the 3rd washer on the top, the last
nut then slowly tighten the top nut. Spring compresses, voila.

If you're just compressing the spring and not removing it, the amount of
rod sticking through the top shock mount is immaterial as long as you
can get a full bite with the top nut. If you're removing the spring,
you'll need all the excess length of rod at the top you can get at the
start in order to fully, safely release the spring. Reassembly of a
removed spring requires only a sufficient length of rod coming through
the top hole to fully catch the nut but not too much as you need the
clearance so as not to hit the underside of the fender. Adjust the
position of the plate to the necessary position if needed.

Good luck,

Gary

Subject: TRF Spring Compressor

I recently borrowed a spring compressor which was made and sold by TRF.
The problem I face is that the person who lent it to me never used it
and has no idea how it is used.

This was made by TRF and is specific for Triumphs. It consists of a long
threaded rod with the following configuration (attached to the bar):

one bolt
second bolt
two large washers
a 1/2" thick plate that is square with one end rounded and four
1/2" holes, one in each corner
a 1/2" thick plate that is rectangular with both ends rounded
and 4 3/8" holes, one in each corner
two large washers
one bolt

It is apparent that this must work from the inside of the front spring
but there sin't anything to "catch" the spring
other than these 2 plates which slide losely up and down the rod.

Could someone please describe how this works to compress the front
springs?

Thanks.
