Spitfire bonnet latches

Hi list,

I've got another "just wanted to know" type question for those who've
been around awhile. My 78 Spitfire has chrome bonnet latches that have
the letter *M* as part of the design. Are these aftermarket latches? If
so, what does the *M* stand for? If not, what does the *M* stand for?
