I would say cured, but it's too early to tell for sure.
I screwed up the courage to check and adjust the datum track gaps on the 2.5
today.
At the bottom of the track (full vacuum), I got a measurement of 57 thou.,
light sliding fit.
Took out the diaphragm control springs, finding the diaphragm, nylon link
and rollers in good order. Fitted a pipe, sucked on it and measured the gap
with the rollers at the top.
This gap was over 8 thou., probably 9+ but not quite 10-WRONG!!!
I noticed the screws were slightly chewed so someone had been playing. Set
the gap to 3 thou.. Tightened and rechecked both gaps.
I also noticed that, owing to the cable being a bit scruffy, that the
overfuel lever was not returning fully. Until I can replace the cable, I've
simply locked the outer cable nearer the bulkhead.
Started the car up and it actually needed choke for more than a few
seconds-good omen. As soon as it was warm, I bunged in a Colourtune. the
flame was Bunsen blue-great.
Tickover has now gone a lot smoother. The adjustments sent it up to 1200rpm
but at 700, it's lost all the shaking.
On the road, the car seems much livelier. After a quick 2-mile drive, I took
out a plug. Cafe et creme-spot on!
So, on paper, it's right. I'll try the car on a trip now and see how it
goes. Apart from the uneven running, my first proper fuel calculation
spurred me into sorting it out. As near as I could tell, I was getting 16.1
miles to the gallon. Told you it was rich, which is more than I am.
My most grateful thanks to all of you who helped by sending the information
for me to tackle this job,
Regards,
Dave Hill.
