I lost my oil cap for my 80 Spit on the weekend. I tried making a temporary
replacement until my new one arrives with aluminum foil. I folded it over a
couple of thicknesses and formed it around the oil filler. The car ran fine
for most of the weekend and then began to run like a total dog. I limped
home and discovered that the center of my temporary oil cap was gone and
there was oil all over the underside of my bonnet. Have I damaged my engine
by using this kludge? I am still showing sufficient oil in the engine. Are
there any pressure requirements that I am violating by having the cap open,
that would have led to my poor running?
Thanks,
