Rob & Dan,
I'm a little unclear as to why you need to remove this, but if you do,
DON'T just pull on the cable. There is indeed a square mechanism inside
the wiper motor assembly that is holding it. If it is really necessary
to remove it, you will have to disassemble the assembly. Pretty
straightforward, but you might as well clean It up & re-grease the
components while it is apart. This gear mechanism is a common culprit
when wipers go bad. (frozen cable shears gears, frozen, dirty or jammed
gears burn out motors etc)
Be careful as you pull the assembly apart so you can put it back
together the way it came apart.
Personnally, I would just tie it out of the way if possible, without
putting a strain or bind on the cable.
  Hope this helps.
