Do the brakes work? With the car safely on jackstands, you could have
someone press hard on the brake pedal whilst loosening the nuts (assuming
you have the bolt-on-style adaptors).

Unless the drain plug actually helps hold the tank in the car (pretty sure
it doesn't), leave it there for now. Siphon any remaining gas, then pull
the tank out and deal with the plug later with still-stronger penetrants
(Kroil, PB Blaster MoPar manifold heat riser solvent stuff, etc.).
