Thanks to all for the replies.

I took both units apart, a simple matter of bending out 3 tabs on each.
Revealed a simple wire-wound resistor with a wiper attached to the float
lever.

In one unit the wiper was mangled. In the other, the resistive wire was
badly connected to the post.

Reassembled the good wiper with the good wire, and now I get 30-odd ohms
with the lever at one extreme, and around 250 at the other extreme. In
other words, I got one good one out of 2 bad ones. In other words, it's
fixed!!!
