Hi Mark....
I drove my first TR 4A with that thing removed, for some time, as I was
restoring it... and I noticed a significant amount of flex in the
dash... enough to make me feel that the piece is essential... And
years ago...I recall seeing another TR 4 at a vintage race... and while
it idled... and I could see his whole dash move back and forth just from
the rough idle... it was pretty bad...
I would get a new support.
When you find one... this has been a thread before... but you can either
recover it... (FOT members have shared stories of great success in doing
so...with vinyle), you could spend the money on a recover kit, or you
could strip it down to the bare metal... and paint it... (Mine is bare
metal, painted black...looks great...I like it...but it's no longer
padded... and this could be a concern for people thick legs!)
