Matt,
Amazing timing, I'd say. Interestingly enough, I had developed a
similar clunk with my Spit. Mine, however, wa on the driver side. I
didn't think it was U-Joints because I had just replaced all three in
the rear end area.
So I began prodding, pulling, pushing, twisting and otherwise inspecting
the rear suspension to see where the mysterious clunk was coming from.
Further exploration revealed that the vertical link had slack when
pulling forward and back. So I removed the bolt, sleeve and two nylon
spacers from the assembly and found the bolt to be about 3/4 as big in
diameter as it started out. Concurrently, I discovered that the metal
sleeve through which the bolt goes was likewise worn completely in two
at one end.
Fortunately, I had a spare assembly and robbed the critical pieces to
replace those that were worn. And now, until I discover the next
troublesome noise, all is well.
I don't know if this is your trouble as well, but it is worth a look to
see.
