I have my '73 J type O/D apart for cleaning and replacing o-rings and
filters (tranny's out for a rebuild-done). I found the operating
pistons a little more worn than I'd like, and the inside clutch surface
is glazed over. The brake ring has a little corrosion which I touched
up with 400 sandpaper. I had heard that Volvo had used the J-types and
had an improved operating piston with 2 rings, so I went to the local
Volvo dealer to buy 2 new ones. The only ones they found on the
microfiche had just the single o-ring and were a little thicker in
overall dimension. I think they might work, but I passed because they
were $23.00 each while Moss listed an operating piston SET for $6.50.
Does anyone have any specifics on this subject, and do you think a
light scuffing is in order on the clutch surface? Also, the pressure
filter washer was not there. Since I don't know what it looks like, I
wonder if a spare thrust washer from the tranny might not be an
adequate replacement?
