First, thanks to those who responded. 5 e-mails in two hours,
I don't feel like I'm wrenching in isolation anymore.
To summarize this fountain of wisdom:
Two suggestions to whack the collar that the tie rod end fits
into with a hammer, while holding a second hammer against
the opposite side, or while levering up the tie rod end. I did
both.
One warning against using WD40 in the presence of open flame.
Heeded. I knew this. Worth hearing again.
One suggestion to get the scissor-style ball joint removing tool.
I looked for one of these last week, couldn't find it locally.
(Victoria British lists it for $30.)
Well, I soaked the thing again with a penetrant, whacked the
collar a few times, then regarded my $3 Chinese-made pickle fork
with disgust, and borrowed a friend's Craftsman fork which fit
a little better. Three whacks and pop. I'll never know what
was essential. Kind of like when you open a jar for the wife,
and then she says "Oh sure after I loosened it for you."
Better tools, easier job. Anybody want a mangled cheap pickle
fork? It worked good on one side...
Again, thanks for the help.
