Actually, there is such a tool to remove them, and I don't recall it being
that much more costly than a good set of pliers.  I can't remember where I
got mine (probably NAPA) but it looks like a large needle nose pliers, but
the ends are rectangular and flattened, with a cross-hatched pattern on the
outside surface to prevent slippage.  You then insert it into the space of
the snap ring and spread.  It makes removing these type of rings MUCH
easier (and safer) than the old screwdriver method!
