Righto, Don. This goes back to a previous comment that the 18th, 19th and
early 20th century engineers used a water analogy to describe what happpens in
electrical circuits. That was why early cars had positive grounding
(earthing).
The Brits call them valves (analogus to the "valves" that control the flow of
the current in a water system ) because controlling (electrical) current is
what the things do. Yanks call them tubes because that is what the things
look like. Also Remember there was no such thing as a vacuum tube until
around 1916. Cheers.
