The 'altrnater' actually does produce true alternating current, but through
the diode pack (array) inside the unit this is 'rectified' into direct
current that the car and all the other divices are designed to use.
Without these diodes (which are actually little electronic one way valves)
and the regulator, you would get alternating or A-C voltage that varied in
frequency and output as the engine sped varied.
