I agree with Ken. Fuel pumps operate at much higher pressure than can be
obtained bench testing. If the fuel pump is the original rebuildable
type, the rebuild is easy and pretty much foolproof. (Assuming you
install the little valves correctly!) I rebuilt one for my TR250 and was
quite pleased with the results.

The only condition I can think of that spews gas from the carbs would be
the infamous sticking needle valve. I seem to recall an overflow that
vents the excess gas onto the exhaust manafold, not the sump!
