There's been several posts on how to set timing at 10 BTDC static,
but they seem more complex than what I do. My method will also
work with both electronic ignitions and points. Humm, I call
it my method, but it's likely I stole this idea from somewhere...

Set the crank at 10 degrees BTDC, (or whatever you want your static
timing to be set at).

Pull the coil wire off the distributor cap, and point the end
to something that will ground. I used the nut on the valve cover
as it's right there on a TR6.

Loosen the bolt holding the distributor.

Turn on the ignition.

Rotate the distributor until you see the coil wire send an arc
to ground. NOTE: Make sure that the cylinder that's about to
fire (#1 or #6 on a six) has not fired yet. That is, be sure
that the points are closed before you rotate the distrib. If
working with an electronic ignition, simply move the distrib
so that it's way retarded, then advance the timing until you
see the arc from the coil wire. Once you've seen the arc, you
can lift off the distbutor cap to ensure that the rotor is point
to the correct plug wire.

Tighten the distributor bolt.

Hope this helps...
