Foam Air Cleaners

 I have set of "RAM" foam style air cleaner on a TR3B, with
 a TR4A set of Stromberg carburettors. The top speed of the 
 was a about 65 miles per hour.  I then discovered that the 
 foam material in the air cleaner had hardened up. Has any 
 one has similar experiences and has any one been able to 
 replace the foam material??  Or is a set K&N air filters
 the way to go?
