Terry,
Hey man, don't give up now! You've learned the biggest lesson already.
Only buy what you feel comfortable maintaining, whether that be by yourself
(good time to start), or be ready to pay the piper. Judging by that first
mechanic (your parent's favorite), you've already payed for the whole damn band.
Unfortunately, you didn't ask us for the collective advice on how to
handle these various maladies, but you know we're here for ya man.
Did you ruin the existing block? Or just the pan? Maybe the British car
specialist will help you formulate a workable fix for this motor, including a
little sweat equity on your part, if he would allow it. There is no better way
to glean wrenching experience than under the tutelage at the elbow of an
experienced master. (or so I tell my crew at work).
Fear not, all will come together (LBC's have a way of doing that)
