Rich,
As there is a 'pre-load' of .003 inch on the carrier bearings, the case
spreader allows you to drop in and remove the carrier, bearings, and shims
easier.  I say easier because with only .003 the load is quite light and
with VERY gentle tapping (on the carrier to remove and on the shims while
re-assembling ) one can remove and replace the carrier etc. without the
special tool -
