I saw a problem like this once on a friend's TR6. The problem turned
out to be the shift linkage in the top cover. The shift interlock
plunger was missing, so the interlock wasn't locking the other shafts in
place when reverse was engaged. Normally this wouldn't be a huge
problem because the detents on each shaft keep them in place. But if
they are loose, the 3rd/4th gear shaft can slip enough to cause the
interlock ball between this shaft and the reverse shaft to drag and
lock.
It should be simple enough to check this. Shift into reverse and remove
the gearshift lever. You should just have to remove the shift boot and
the setscrew, then rotate the cap holding the lever down. Look at the
position of the shift levers, and if the right and middle one aren't
lined up, this could be the problem. If reverse is no longer stiff,
just check for play in the 3rd/4th shaft.
Hope this helps.
