Paul,
Unless you have a good reason to pull the whole diff, (not the most fun
I can think of), you may just want to pull that axle off - giving yourself some
working room - and try to back that broken bolt out of there using the old
"punch on the side and work it out" trick. Should you decide to pull the whole
diff, you might as well change the bearings on the stubs and the oil seals
there and the at the input end.
However, unless there is a leak now, you probabaly don't need to do
that. I don't mean to say bolt it all up tight and forget about
it....no,no....order all the servicable seals, bearings, bolts, u-joints etc.
and do it all at once...both sides. You will be down for a while pressing off
the bearings and such (careful not to bend the stub mounting plates), and this
may be a better time to do it than the heat of the summer. It's just the ol'
shipwright's disease has a tendency to strike once you get down there and start
disassembling and cleaning and painting.....
Good Luck, just went there-did that

Subject: Spit rear end trouble found
Well I believe I found my problem. It seems that the seal housing plate
on the left side is missing THREE of it's bolts and the ONE that is
there is sheared in half with one half of it remaining in my
differential case. This caused the inner shaft to pull out enough to
cause my problem. I applied some pressure and it all popped back into
place. But now I need to drop it all and hope that I can remove the bolt
remains some how. I'm going to try and get hold of the PO and find out
why he didn't replace those bolts.
