That's a good question. The stock set up is little more than loose
weave steel wool soaked in oil... I don't think it stops a lot of
dust, etc. Its' a source of maintainance (you have to soak them in
solvent occasionally, and then re soak the wool in oil. If you're
planning performance mods I'd go with modernizing the air filters
too. It will help lengthen the life of that spiffy new engine
