All,
Some of you may recall me celebrating my '74 TR6 passing
California smog last year. I said all that was required was to
replace the metering needles (and a little leaning).
Well my joy has has turned to despair as I have spent the
last several months attempting to get "Rags" running as it did
prior to the "tune-up" (by someone supposedly more knowledgeable than
I). The symptoms are:
1) very rough idle when cold with choke
2) missing/popping when cold with choke
3) "hunting" when warm on constatnt throttle
4) lots of popping on overrun
I though this was due to the car running lean, so I attempted
to enrichen the mixture only to find that the needle on the rear
carb was already screwed all the way in (meaning it was as rich as
could be set!). The front Zenith appeared OK. Plug colour appears OK
I realize that this is a clue, but read on.
Now the car has developed a (new) definite misfire which appears
to be getting worse. This misfire occures mostly under gentle
throttle around 2000 rpm, but appears to diminsh with increasing
throttle and rpms.
I may be dealing with two problems here. I'm not the world
greatest mechanic, so am seeking some advice. Aside from the
jetting problems (but the plugs look good!), could it be a timing
problem? (too far retarded?), marginal coil? marginal plug leads?
marginal plugs?
I've checked points, distributor cap, new condenser, distributor
vacume line. Help!
