I just became the proud owner of a 76 Spitfire 1500. Not too bad of shape.
Normal rust, sound engine, shot wheel bearing, flaked up dash, etc. Oh yeah,
a smashed windshield and passenger window. But it was free, so I am still
quite happy and my wife even likes it. Anyone know much about doing a
windshield on ones own?
Also are there any secrets or helpful hints about restoring a Spitfire. As
this will be my first attempt into a new hobby.

Paul - congrats on the acquisition. Sounds like the start of a something
good. You are in luck - as I just replaced the windscreen on my Mk I Spit.
this past weekend. Some dos and don'ts.
DO use lots of soapy water when putting the new rubber seal around the new
glass.
DON'T use a lubicant like WD-40, etc. (although no harm, it's harder to get
off than soapy water)
DO use the "rope trick" to pull the inner edge of the rubber seal over the
lip of the flange - see the Bentley manual or other restoration books - they
all describe it.
DON'T try this alone - you'll need a helper, at least one and maybe two.
DO work slowly and carefully
DON'T use a screwdriver, or other sharp tool to pull the rubber over the
flange
DO use a hard plastic installing tool available at Pep Boys, NAPA, and other
parts stores.
DON'T beat, tap or rap on the glass with a rubber mallet, it can crack the
glass (I should know)
DO use constant steady hand pressure to push the glass into place.
DON'T get frustrated if it doesn't go in easily the first time, it may take
a few attempts to get it just right.
Good luck and have fun.
