| 1) Take photos AS you dismantle the car.  Take LOTS of photos, from LOTS of 
angles of the same parts, areas, etc.  It does make a big difference on the 
reassembly.  It's cheap insurance.
One thing which no one has mentioned about "remembering" how stuff looked 
before being taken apart is to use a video camera. Pictures need 
to be indexed which may not always work out once you get the film developed but 
a video can be indexed on the fly by describing what is 
being done and recording that on to the tape.
Obviously not everyone has a camcorder but they are certainly much more 
prevalent than a few years ago and the tape can be reused (or saved 
for a pretty good record of what and how you did stuff).
