Maurice... er Francois,

Here, in New France ... er, USA the cars had a little box driven by the
speedometer cable that counted down the miles and after a certain number of
miles it would activate a switch which would light a lamp on the dash which
was marked "check EGR".  This indicates to the owner to take the car to the
dealer to ensure that all of the emissions reducing apperatus was still
working.

Not that anybody did it.
