FWIW, my 76 TR6 is painted body color on the rocker panels with an
overlay of the black undercoat stuff used to prevent corrosion and keep
rocks from damaging the metal. I know it is an overaly because the black
stuff is worn away (or at least thinner) in some places. The tail of the
car is low gloss black as a previous poster noted. My car has original
paint.
Sorry about the delay in this response but I just now had a close look
at this stuff on my car.
