It can be done.  With the help of Jim TenCate, I successfully used a grease
gun filled with oil to build pressure in order to switch into O/d on the
bench. We drilled out a bolt to accept the grease fitting, used thick grease
on the grease gun cup to hold the oil in and squeezed like hell while the
other one of us made the circuit. Don't forget to shift into 3rd or 4th!
